You Can’t Just Be a Developer Anymore
AI is making coding faster, so developers need to bring more than code: product thinking, design judgment, and user empathy. The next generation of developers won’t just build features, they’ll **think like consultants and solve problems.**
One thing I’m realising as a developer is that being good at writing code is no longer enough.
You need to make design decisions. Think about the product. Understand why a feature exists, who it helps, and whether it actually solves the user’s problem.
Because AI can handle a huge part of the implementation now. Honestly, we’re reaching a point where we don’t need to manually write every line of code anymore. The real value is increasingly in knowing what to build, why to build it, and how it should work.
So I think developers need to start thinking more like consultants.
Don’t just take a ticket and implement it.
Question it. Improve it. Understand the business. Think about the user.
AI is making developers faster. That also means the bar for what a developer should bring to the table is going up.
If you want to grow faster and climb the corporate ladder, maybe it’s time to step up from being just a developer.
